During the month of March Solon units responded to 69 calls.
Statistics were: 32 EMS calls, 22 power lines/trees down calls, 5 grass fires, 1 structure fire, 2 personal damage accidents and 6 misc.
As you know fire danger was very high for a few weeks. However, even though there was a burn ban in place we still had 5 grass fires, in total burning approximately 6 acres. Sadly one of these fires also burned down a home and a pole barn. The fire was very close to causing two other homes to become involved. Due to fast response from Cedar Springs Fire, Algoma Fire, Sand Lake Fire, Kent City Fire, Courtland Fire and Solon Fire the fire was contained to only the one home, a pole barn, two cars and a field. In all 6 departments, 17 apparatus and 37 fire fighters responded.
March also threw at us a pretty nasty storm on the night of the 30th. The volume of calls that came in, in a short time, was intense. Solon Fire quickly had responders in the field. Due to the volume of calls Solon Fire set up it’s dispatch center. In this we received calls as normal from KC dispatch. Those calls were written down (quite quickly I may add) as they came in. Then to help relief the radio traffic that KC dispatch had to handle, we dispatched one of our units to the next call as soon as they had cleared the call they were on. In all Solon handled 20 calls with 12 people and only 4 apparatus. These calls ranged from trees in the road, to power lines down, trees on fire, a tree that fell through a house trailer and a medical call.
How fast did calls come in? Here are the times the calls came out. Just in case you wondered!
